Designing children's bedrooms is loads of fun but, when they are approaching the tweenage years, it can be a juggling act - you need to strike the balance of not making the room too mature whilst ensuring they won't outgrow it too soon!
We love this bedroom we designed for Lewis, a sport-mad 11 year old boy who was off to secondary school and felt his room was now too 'babyish'. The revamped space answered the brief of staying relevant as Lewis gets older, with contemporary, dark walls and playful pops of orange. Thankfully, the clients agree! From the onset, we wanted to include Lewis in the design process, after all, he would be spending the most time in the space. Luckily, his parents were on board with this so, prior to the consultation meeting, we asked Lewis to fill in a questionnaire which clarified some important details. Pink was not an option and, an ardent Man City fan, red was a no-no too! Storage was an issue (isn't it always!) and, in answer to what his ‘dream’ bedroom would feature, Lewis quite modestly said somewhere to put a drink when he’s in bed and some cool lighting! Easy enough to make those dreams come true!
More information came to light during the on site meeting with Lewis' parents. We learnt the cabin bed needed to remain although certain aspects of it were not working: the desk beneath it was too small to be practical and the configuration meant that Lewis slept with his back to the door and was uncomfortable reading in bed. These issues were resolved by switching the ladder on the cabin bed so Lewis could sit up in bed to read; removing the unused desk and replacing it with storage and a chill out area; and by creating a more purposeful study space at the chimney breast.
We proposed the following design scheme incorporating essentials like a large wardrobe with sliding doors which would be less obtrusive in the room. The wardrobe would accommodate more clothes and shoes but also the games and sports equipment that had previously not had a home. Little details like an area to showcase Lewis' ever-expanding collection of trophies and medals were also well received as was a much more effective and flexible lighting arrangement.

And here's the completed project...a bedroom Lewis is proud of, that will stand the test of time and stay current as he gets older.
