Our design briefs are so varied, which is one of the reasons why we love the job so much - no two projects are ever the same. Sometimes, we are presented with a totally blank canvas; other jobs may involve building existing pieces into a design scheme - such pieces could be anything from furniture to wallpaper.
In this instance, it all began with a stunning piece of artwork that our clients already owned.
The larger brief involved updating the living room in a Victorian terraced cottage. The aim was to make it feel cosy, calm and contemporary whilst maximising the space and being respectful of the beautiful period features of the home.
Keeping the walls light helps the room feel a little more spacious and Farrow & Ball’s Ammonite has a stronger, more modern look than the previous cream paint. Against this elegant backdrop, the abstract painting is much more impactful: the walls pick up on the grey tones of the piece but peppering some of the warm bronze and rust shades in a few accessories creates a more cohesive style.
To maximise the proportions of the room, the furniture and accessories are simple and fuss free. Sofa.com's Holly corner sofa is the ideal seating solution for the space - as stylish as it is comfy, the Holly has a neat frame, with slimline, splayed arms, tall tapered legs and a deep seat. Perfect for curling up in front of the fire!
Surprisingly, there is now more furniture, including the considerably larger sofa, than before but the room feels bigger. Clean lines and lighter looking pieces of furniture give the illusion of more space and ensure the room does not look cramped or cluttered. Replacing the curtains with white shutters enhances the uncluttered, streamlined look.
Our clients tell us that they feel instantly relaxed upon arriving home to this calm and contemporary space. You can see more before and after photos of this room below.
