Small Changes-Big Impact

Updated: Feb 14, 2022

Initial Moodboard & 'Before' Image

Very often, a few simple changes to a space can create a big impact and transform your way of living. In a recent project, we were tasked with creating a more purposeful, cosy sitting room in a converted barn. The space was actually the heart of the home - a hallway / sitting room - but it felt more like a through room. With some considered updates, this room has become the perfect spot for the clients to relax with a cuppa (or a G&T!) together with their three Labradors.

The oak staircase dominated so we needed to pair this right back so the room feels less like a 'hall with a seating area' and more of a 'sitting room with a staircase'. Removing the curved bottom step and its banister has created more space and the streamlined result is less dated. It also opens up the window and its view to the beautiful garden. Painting the oak spindles in an off white helped the staircase to disappear whilst retaining the oak banister keeps a touch of character, complementing the original beams. Replacing the green carpet with a neutral toned, bleach cleanable one enhances the cosy, classic style and was the final step in toning down the impact of the stairs.

Transforming the staircase

With three Labradors, carpet had proved impractical in the room itself so this was replaced with Old Farmhouse Green Limestone Flagstones which, as well as being very forgiving of muddy paws, feels more in-keeping with the style of the characterful home. A couple of cast iron radiators were another addition that feel more sympathetic to the style of the home and really help to cosy up the room.

The dark, patterned wallpaper felt a little oppressive so we opened the room up with Little Greene Company's Broad Stripe in Icing, which has a timeless elegance. The remaining walls were painted in the neutral shade of Little Greene's Portland Stone Pale that gives a sense of spaciousness whilst also enabling the original oak beams to really stand out.

The impact of wallpaper

The scene was set for us to pay attention to one of the key aspects of the brief - creating a cosy sitting area overlooking the garden. Two Marks & Spencer Rochester chairs in a stunning teal velvet upholstery are the perfect marriage of style and comfort, creating a cosy place for the clients to relax with their dogs. Picking up the teal accent in the lamp, roman blind and abstract rug brings the scheme together and adds more warmth.

Finally, lighting is always a sure fire way to update a space and the elegant chrome and glass pendant and wall lights add a touch of sophistication to the room.

A lovely 'before' and 'after' to show our client relaxing in his new favourite spot!
